New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: 18 Dead, Compensation Announced, Investigation Underway

A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night has left 18 dead and many injured. The incident occurred around 10 pm as thousands of devotees gathered at the station, heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival. Severe overcrowding led to chaos, resulting in this heartbreaking tragedy.

Compensation for Victims
Indian Railways has announced compensation for the victims:

  • ₹10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives
  • ₹2.5 lakh for the seriously injured
  • ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries

Leaders React to the Tragedy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep distress over the incident, offering condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He assured that authorities are providing necessary support to those affected.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also shared his grief, stating, “Deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede that occurred at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is working to assist all those affected by this tragic incident.”

Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister, Atishi, visited LNJP Hospital, where the victims were admitted, to offer support to their families. Delhi LG VK Saxena also visited the injured and directed officials to ensure relief measures.

What Caused the Stampede?
The stampede occurred due to an unusually high number of passengers at the station. Authorities introduced four additional special trains to manage the crowd but were unable to prevent the tragedy.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra, explained that the incident took place on platform no. 14, where the Prayagraj Express was stationed. Delays in the departures of Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani further exacerbated the congestion.

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity (ED/IP), Railway Board, stated that a two-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident. “The situation is now under control, and passengers have been accommodated on special trains. Train operations at the station are normal,” he added.

Calls for Accountability
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Centre for its handling of the situation, demanding greater transparency and accountability. He urged the government to disclose the exact number of fatalities and injuries, along with details about missing individuals.

Conclusion
As the nation mourns the lives lost, the focus remains on providing relief to the affected families and ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.
